SFUG Indy Overview and Resources

Thank you for all who attended the SFUG Indianapolis meeting today.  It was great to see both new and familiar faces at the event.  For those who weren't able to attend, here is an event summary and survey to help with future meeting planning.

Event Sponsor ExactTarget presented two client success stories utilizing the integration into Salesforce for their marketing and customer communications via email.  If you are interested in the new features that ExactTarget has to offer or have any questions go to www.exacttarget.com.

Saleforce.com's Randy Kidd was at the meeting to discuss the new features and products that were announced at DreamForce.  He explained the significance the products and/or features have to YOU as a SF user.  Kidd also gave us several Successforce resources  to help users get the most of the product. Please see the highlights of DreamForce and resources below.

CRM Buyer wrote: “Force.com Sites, part of the company's Force.com cloud computing platform, allows customers to run their Web sites in Salesforce.com's cloud…Essentially, the new functionality expands Salesforce.com's role in cloud computing for the enterprise. Clearly, there are tools on the market that allow companies to connect back-end systems to a front-end Web site. However, Web sites built on Force.com Sites will be more dynamic…as they are based on an internal business applications running on Force.com. Sites dedicated to event registrations, hotel concierge services or recruiting, for example, could be updated in near real-time.”

IDG News Service: “Salesforce.com moved deeper into the world of cloud computing on Monday, announcing partnerships that link its Force.com hosted applications platform with services from Facebook and Amazon Web Services. Addressing a packed hall of Salesforce.com customers, Benioff painted a picture of a computing Wild West in which cloud platforms from different vendors are combining to create new opportunities and challenges.”

InternetNews.com wrote: “Salesforce.com chairman and CEO Marc Benioff plans to make the software as a service company even more prominent in the cloud. Speaking to a packed house at the company's Dreamforce 2008 conference today, he discussed tie-ins with other cloud players such as Facebook and Amazon…A panel of experts recently picked cloud computing as the next great computing revolution. Benioff's remarks reminded the fray of the buzz surrounding cloud computing.”

Wall Street Journal wrote: “’Cloud computing’ is the hottest tech buzzterm since ‘Web 2.0.’…But the company that has embraced the term most passionately is Salesforce.com, which broadened the meaning to include all software accessed over the Internet…Salesforce.com’s Dreamforce conference…was dubbed by one speaker the ‘Woodstock of cloud computing.’…Once you cut past the hype there’s something pretty interesting taking place. Businesses that write software that runs on Salesforce.com’s ‘platform’ can now have the same software run on Facebook. And they can use Amazon’s services to support this software.”

CIO wrote: “Salesforce.com executives and Sandberg showed off how a recruiting app made on the Force.com platform could be embedded into a Facebook page. The app leveraged the social aspects of Facebook to determine what ‘friends’ on the service might be a leading candidate for a job listing. Such an example shows how business focused application can use Facebook's ‘social graph.’”

CNET News.com wrote: “Sandberg was on stage to tout a Facebook partnership with Salesforce.com by which applications running on the Force.com infrastructure can be presented on Facebook pages. Salesforce.com offers online tools for businesses managing their customer relationships--and an increasingly sophisticated programmable foundation for customized applications and Web sites. If programmers using the Salesforce.com infrastructure jump aboard, they could bring a significant new business angle to the scope of Facebook's applications, which today tend to be much more about entertainment.”

Dow Jones Newswires wrote: “The [Facebook-salesforce.com] partnership aims to bring Force.com, Salesforce.com's developer platform, onto Facebook, which has more than 120 million users around the world and is popular with younger users. The deal will let developers design business applications for Facebook, allowing companies to manage sales data and organize meetings over the popular site.”

SDTimes.com wrote: “Salesforce.com moved to solidify its position as a hosting platform with the announcement today of new integrations with Amazon Web Services…Salesforce's newly found dedication to categorizing itself as a cloud company extended to the ceilings of the keynote auditorium, where blue skies with clouds were projected during CEO and co-founder Marc Benioff's keynote presentation. Benioff enthusiastically espoused the numerous perceived benefits of cloud computing.”

The Motley Fool wrote: “Salesforce is launching Force.com Sites today, a venture that finds the company hosting third-party sites and applications on its proven cloud platform. It makes perfect sense. Salesforce now manages customer information for 47,700 companies. It's not just a thick Rolodex of smalltime upstarts.”

The Register wrote: “In a world where ‘software as a service’ was looking dated, Salesforce.com's has gone hip with Facebook and Amazon while taking swipes at Microsoft's attempts to be cool. salesforce.com's chief executive Marc Benioff has unveiled Force.com for Facebook to integrate 260,000 of the social networks' applications with business applications inside the Salesforce.com platform…In a nod to businesses, Force.com for Sites was announced to build web-based applications in Salesforce.com's Apex language and host them inside Salesfore.com data centers.”

VentureBeat wrote: “The Facebook announcement is probably the most significant, because it allows developers for Force.com…to tap into the huge number of users on Facebook…It’s also a way for Facebook to introduce more business-oriented apps into platform, which is largely dominated by stuff that’s more fun and gimmicky…The Amazon announcement is also significant, particularly because it shows that Salesforce’s and Amazon’s cloud hosting services can be complementary…Overall, the keynote presented a promising vision: Salesforce will continue expanding its business application platform, and connecting it to other Internet clouds and platforms…I don’t think it was just PR-speak when he said he isn’t concerned about Microsoft’s announcement last week that it’s launching its own cloud application platform called Windows Azure; Benioff playfully described Azure as ‘future vaporware.’”

ZDNet wrote: “The message at Dreamforce is clear - No More Software. In his keynote, Benioff took some small jabs at Microsoft, which announced its own cloud computing platform called Azure, at its Professional Developers Conference last week…But more importantly, it further validates the cloud when the company that has the most invested in the software business - Microsoft - recognizes that the platform is moving into the cloud. Amazon has already said it, he said. So has Google, Facebook. IBM. That’s the power of the cloud, he said, calling it a shared infrastructure or a multi-tenancy environment - sort of like an apartment building.”

Bloomberg wrote: “Salesforce.com Inc., the biggest seller of online customer-management software, plans to take advantage of extra storage and computer capacity by hosting Web sites in its data centers. Customers will be able to create and operate Internet pages with a new service called Force.com Sites.”

gokubi.com wrote: “Sites is a big breakthrough…This is a way to extend what you’re already doing to the world. Sites enable opening up your database in controlled ways to your constituents, with the exact look and feel you want. Prepare yourself for a wave of innovative add on products that take advantage of this new way of thinking.”

InformationWeek wrote: “Called Force.com Sites, it's an aggressive effort by the company to extend its development and hosting platform more broadly across the Web, and expand beyond its roots in on-demand sales force automation software.”

ZDNet wrote: “Facebook and Salesforce.com today announced that the two companies will partner to make it easier for Force.com developers to utilize Facebook’s API while creating hosted applications. According to Facebook, the new relationship is designed to create a more established development community between Facebook’s 120 million users and Salesforce.com’s 100,000 developers…The Force.com for Facebook sites claim to help developers use Facebook APIs within any of their developed Force.com applications. The Force.com for Facebook capabilities use Facebook’s social graph to create social data to merge with recruiting, productivity and project collaboration applications. Force.com for Facebook will help developers build social and business applications.”

BusinessWeek wrote: “Cut to the annual Dreamforce conference on Nov. 3, when Salesforce.com unveils its new software, Force.com Sites. It offers tools that will let companies…build Web sites that solicit feedback from customers on pages served by Salesforce's computers. Force.com represents a foray into cloud computing, which lets customers pay someone else to house the ever-rising mountains of data and computing power needed to deliver information on the Internet.”

eWEEK wrote: “Salesforce.com leverages Google's Visualization API to let programmers build business intelligence reporting and analysis tools for their enterprise applications…Salespeople and marketing workers can use such tools to better understand business processes and better serve their customers. Human resources departments may use such BI tools internally to help illuminate employee status, while financial analysts could have a field day rendering their business analyses with the API.”

Mashable wrote: “Salesforce.com is adding a major new component to its platform: allowing developers to run their external facing websites and applications on top of the company’s infrastructure…As an example, ThomasNet uses Salesforce.com for managing their recruitment efforts. Now, they’ve moved job applications over to Force.com Sites, and those submissions flow right into the company’s Salesforce.com app. Previously, this would require a Salesforce.com customer to integrate with their existing job site, but now, it can be turned on and managed all through the Web interface that Salesforce provides.”

San Francisco Chronicle wrote: “Chairman and CEO Marc Benioff co-founded Salesforce.com in an apartment in San Francisco in 1999 at the height of the dot-com bubble, when he became convinced that the main vehicle for delivering software would one day be the Internet. Nearly 10 years later, his idea of "software as a service" has been validated…In July, the company was on track to hit $1 billion by January 2009. Meanwhile, Microsoft's executives said last week that its own Office applications will be adapted to run in what the software industry now calls the cloud.”

Wall Street Journal wrote: “This isn’t your run of the mill Web-site support, however. The goal is to bridge the divide that exists in many businesses between Web operations and internal information technology…Not only are the two often run by different groups, but more importantly data doesn’t always move freely between the Web site and a business’s systems.”

ZDNet wrote: “On Monday at its annual Dreamforce conference, Salesforce.com will change forever the way that businesses build websites. It is launching Force.com Sites, which provides a hosted website infrastructure for publishing data from an organisation’s internal Salesforce.com applications to the outside world…Personally this is how I’ve always felt websites should be built.”

November 20 SFUG Indy Meeting!

Hello Indy SFUG Member!

Please join me at the Indianapolis Salesforce User Group (SFUG) Meeting next Thursday, Nov. 20.  There will be a continental breakfast with some time to meet and greet with fellow members at 7:45am.  We will begin our presentations promptly at 8:15am to ensure everyone keeps on a schedule.

We are pleased to welcome Randy Kidd, Director of Alliances for the Central Region to share with us some of the exciting announcements that were made at DreamForce this year and, more importantly, what they mean to YOU as a Salesforce user.  Kidd will also cover many of the resources and tools that are available to SF users to help you on your way to SUCCESS!

Martha Leistikow and Adam Becker of Exact Target will present Salesforce.com and ExactTarget: Leverage your marketing investments and deliver results by making your Salesforce.com data actionable through the power of email.

If your company is interested in sponsoring an event, please contact me at dlaffey@ricssoftware.com or 515.333.4677.

I hope to see you there!

Indy Group Members going to Dreamforce

Hello Everyone!

I have had a couple of requests from Indy Salesforce User Group members to try and meet up at Dreamforce.  For those of you that are going and are interested in meeting up, I thought I would post this so you can start a discussion thread.

As for upcoming meetings.  I am currently trying to plan one for the week of Nov. 17. This meeting will be held to give those who did go to Dreamforce the opportunity to discuss what they learned and for those who were not able to attend, get some info from other users.  Details to follow.

I am still looking for companies to sponsor user group meetings.  Please contact me if your company may be interested.  This is a great opportunity for your company to get involved with the Indianapolis Saleforce User Group.  We have almost 100 members now!  We need your support!

I hope all is well!  Look for more info to follow on upcoming meetings.

Cheers,
Danielle Laffey
