SVUG Webinar - 9/25/2009 - Topic: Pilot launch of Salesforce Quoting module.

SVUG Webinar -  9/25/2009
Host: Pete Fife/SVUG;
Presenter: Tyler Ziemann Product Manager Salesforce.com,
Topic: Pilot launch of Salesforce Quoting module.
28 SVUG members in attendance...

This one-hour webinar was superbly managed by Pete. Tyler Ziemann gave a crisp and in-depth presentation on the upcoming release of the Salesforce Quoting Module (currently in beta with 30 SF customer testers now).  This feature will be available for Professional and up editions. Professional edition users will need to pay an add-on fee for the product price book module with Salesforce. For those of us who have well-defined product lists, this quoting tool is a great addition - begin a quote, find opportunity, find contact, pull in items from the price book, add any notes to the template as needed - and pdf the document to e-mail the customer. Come spring, users will be able to sync updated quotes to opporunities, and in the summer '10 release, users will be able to edit quoting templates to customize the pdfs including terms & conditions.  Lots of questions generated on the chat screen and Tyler did a commendable job of responding. I would have added the Q&A thread  here but it wasn't saved... Next time!  Very informative and in-depth presentation by Tyler in a one-hour segment - time well spent.

What others are saying:

"I found the session very informative. We’re currently using an add-on product from Apttus to do Sales Proposals for 2 different sales teams. While the Salesforce Quoting product was impressive, it looks like we’ll be keeping Apttus around for a little while. "

Greg M

"Overall, I think the presentation went well.  I did not experience any technical issues.  I was pleased to learn of the new quote functionality.  Thank you Tyler.  I hope that I can utilize the new features, although my first impression is that I’ll be waiting for the entire three part quote functionality to be in place before my company will utilize the option."

Louise C

"It was nice that I can still participate in the SVUG meeting while in Tel Aviv :) I should attend more of these!
Re/the Quote App... I see this app extension falling short of most "serious" customers. It looks like it will be a year before they will have something really "useable" (template editor). This app will give CONSULTANTS and 3rd PARTY PARTNERS more chances to make money quicker (as now there is an outline laid by SFDC and they tweaking will be focused, VisualForce pages etc) It's a move in the right direction... but w/o a configurator etc... this falls short.
"
Joshua M

"The Quoting webinar/demo went well today.  It’s good to see that SFdc is finally addressing the big hole that has existed for a long time… Quoting.  I was a little bummed to hear that the full vision will take almost one year to complete but it is encouraging none the less.  The sooner they get through the Pilot and make it available to other companies we will likely jump right on it.  Quoting (not just the creating a quote and PDF part) but all of the processes surrounding it, Forecasting, Sales Orders, etc. is something that we are trying to solve right now. Sept Quoting and Integration postmortem

Here is the write up from the last weeks meeting.  It appears I have my second strike ;). Below is the write up from from the long time member, Harry. For the webinars I'll be scaling them back just to a single topic and phone bridge.  Thanks for hanging in there but I do want to announce something important.

Come the new year I will no longer be able to run the local meetings for I'm moving out to the Sacramento area.  However the webinars can continue but the local meetings will be a bit hard.  My employer has agreed to let me telecommute and come into the office twice a month. Therefore I'm going to need someone to help out run the local meetings.

Last week's one-hour SVUG webinar organized and hosted by Pete Fife,  had two separate but simultaneous presentations: one by Steel Brick on quoting and one by Pete on ERP. The presentation platform was ILinc. In order to facilitate the two separate sessions, participants were asked to use headsets or use the chat text feature for comments/questions.  The first 10minutes was spent dividing up the attendees into the two separate groups, then squelching all the noise background from the individual microphones and putting everyone on mute.  I  attended the quoting session. Max Rudman was the presenter from SteelBrick. We spent more time in the housekeeping mode asking him to bring his volume level up sufficiently for us to hear. Once that was fixed, Max gave an overview of  "Quote Quickly" which directly integrates with Salesforce. The product appears to have some nice features to simplify the process of everyday quoting with professional pdf style quote pages. Steel Brick will customize a quote form with a company's branding  for $300-500,  and the monthly user fee for Quote Quickly is $29.00. Additionally, users will need to use the Salesforce "Products Module" and that will add another $10/$20 per user per month - FYI... Lastly, I strongly recommend that Pete scale back his ambitious plans for multiple presentations to keep these webinars running efficiently and effectively as he has so well done in past webinar sessions....

  What others have said:

The meeting was informative, but I think the technical issues overshadowed a lot of it. ... Plus there were a number of people who didn’t get the “Mute you Mic” message and so there was a fair amount of background noise during some parts. The guy from Salesforce not being there was also a bummer, but I’m glad that he’s rescheduled.

It was good to see a quoting tool that’s not horrendously expensive.

Lori

My only feedback (which I am sure that you already have ) is the volume was really low so it was very difficult to hear the discussion and a get a good feel for the product.

September 17th Webinar - ERP integrations AND Quoting

Two topics going on at the same time, yes you heard me correctly.  The catch is we'll be utilizing VoIP, voice over IP. Meaning you must have a working headset for your computer to hear and talk with each other.  This will be something new for me. We'll be utilizing the Classroom feature of iLinc, they donated their very cool technology to allow us user groups to hold these remote meetings. To RSVP please use this form, click here.

A Boomi customer will talk about their tool for doing integrations with Salesforce. In the other session we'll have Max from Steelbrick consulting show his quoting tool. There should be plenty of time to ask questions and share with each other some of the things you do.

August 20th SVUG Mini-mini Dreamforce meeting - Postmortem

I wish I could say it was a huge hit, but it wasn't and I take that responsibility.  My goal is never to have a 'Sales Pitch' meeting but this is what it turned out to be, I'm sorry.  What I learned from this experience is I need to make it absolutly clear about how long vendors have, and to not compromise by letting vendors not have a customer to talk. Below is the write up from my long time member Harry Christie from Giga Test.

==================================================================================

August 20th SVUG Mini-mini Dreamforce meeting...

This month Pete delivered on his promise to have a multi-faceted  Users Group  get-together at the Sunnyvale Plug-and-Play Center.
The two tracks included: a marketing track and an Advanced Admin / Baby Developer track.

This write-up focuses on the marketing track..Marilyn Dean moderated the Marketing / Sales Track session.

Josh Tillman, of Refractive Dialer, gave us an in-depth look and demo of his company's product - also called Refractive Dialer. This product is best suited for companies with large databases and particularly outbound sales calls. The features are to numerous to dive into  here,  however some high-lights of Josh's product presentation are as follows:
  • Unique dialing technology
  • First and only multi-line dialing system
  • No dead air or, stated differently, no delay
  • One individual - equivalent to a 40-person call center with Refractive Dialer
  • pulls records from Salesforce and creates record back into Salesforce
  • Compatible with VOIP, Skype,  POTS (plain old telephone service), and company switching networks
  • You choose how to dial out
  • Drop-in feature, allows you to leave a message if connected to a recording system at the contact end, and allows you to move on for the next call
  • Extensive metrics to measure effectivenss and accountability
  • Cost is $8.00/ hour - billable time only
Michael Bonner of Pipeline Management presented his company's product - also called Pipeline Management.

Michael elaborated on the importance of having a well-defined sales operating system "SOS"  in place for the most effective sales results.
The theme of his presentation was to implement "best practice" sales techniques on a routine basis. Pipeline Management is exactly that type of tool and it integrates directly with Salesforce offering the user a one platform solution. At each stage of the sales process - prospecting, qualification, needs analysis, management approvals, and closing the order - Pipeline Management provides the coaching and pointers to keep you on track to assure the highest probability of closing success.

There were also raffle giveaways offered during the session. Dave Taber, had a drawing for a copy of his new book "Salesforce.com Secrets of Success, Josh Tillman had a drawing for a one-month free subscription to Refractive Dialer, and Michael Bonner's drawing was for an  iPod Nano.

Big kudos to Pete Fife for pulling the speakers and logistics together for a well-run and informative SVUG meeting

 What others said

"I found the guest presentations and topics very informative and applicable for my specific clients. The networking was also extremely helpful as well."

Brian H.

"The event itself was nice in terms of location, time, venue. The subject matter was lacking a bit. ... Basically it felt like we were pitched 2 for 2 hours from 2 companies. I was hoping to pickup things for sales and marketing related sfdc stuff."

Ryan V

"The mini dreamforce meeting was great even though a lot of time was spent on the eclipse installation in the ADV Admin/Dev session. .... The speaker provided some valuable information which will help us to explore more about Force.com IDE, especially the ways how to get codes from code.google.com. I really enjoyed this mini dreamforce meeting, will definitely sign up for the next one."

Paul

"I have to say that the Refractive Dialer session was one of the most naked (and ugly) sales pitches I've ever heard at a user group meeting. The second session on Pipeline Manager was also a canned sales pitch.  Smoother, but no less inappropriate in my view. ... I  think we need to have a standard in presentations that vendors aren't allowed to talk about their products (or at most give a 1-2 slide overview of their company)."

David T

"The event was worthwhile because of the networking.  I wish there was less vendor talk and more best practices or lessons learned.  More networking time would be nice"

    Anonymous

"Perfect timing, and interesting topics. My favorite session was the the introduction of Refractive Dialer -- an interesting alternative to predictive dialing. As always, you attract great people, making your events to perfect networking opportunities!"

Aug 20th User Group Meeting

Our August user group meeting is coming up. This meeting will have a combination of 3 key topics: Marketing, Sales, and Adv Admin/Baby Dev.

The Marketing track, Knowing when to pull the trigger, will focus around lead generation and qualification.  We have Joshua Tillman from Refractive dialer bring in a customer to present how they utilize the tool to bring in more leads and their qualification process.

The Sales will be on how to defog that crystal ball, pipeline/forecast management.  Michael Bonner from Pipeline Manager will be brining a customer to explain how they utilize their tool to help gain insight and manage the pipeline.

The Adv Admin/Baby Dev will focus on getting started with Eclipse and how set up your first site.  Micaiah Filkins from Force by Design will be showing us the basics of Eclipse and how to start publishing some of your data in Salesforce to the outside world.

July 16th 2009 Forecasting post wrap up

This webinar was by far my biggest every by a factor of 3. This was a West Coast User group meeting for we had a couple people from the northern, Portland and Seattle user groups along with San Diego. The below write comes from long time user group member Harry Christie who was gracious enough to do this write up.  Some brief stats about the webinar:

  • 72 confirmation, 65 attendees
  • Avg time attendees stayed: 58 min
  • 20 attendees stayed on for 25 mins after to review Mirapoint's Renewal process and how they track Customer Base.
In my last slide I mentioned about an idea which allows the roll-up summary fields to utilize formulas as criteria. Click here to vote for it

Silicon Valley Users Group - July 16th, 2009, Webinar Post Follow up
Written by Harry Christie

Topics: Forecasting webinar with Angela Pellegrino of LinkedIn and Report Customization example by Pete Fife with
Mirapoint.Well folks,

Pete has kept right on target with his SVUG roadmap for 2009 with today's Webinar. As per his previous
SVUG Webinars, iLinc was the presentation platform used and showed great flexibility for both the presenters, and the
attendees. We really put the chat and feedback features to the test during the one-hour conference.  Pete even began the webinar session with a video cam of himself at the controls - whoa fifedog!

Angela gave a an excellent presentation showing how she has created custom objects, custom fields, custom formulas, and validation rules within Salesforce to provide her management the forecasting visibility needed based on the company's defined weighted probabilities for three categories: commit, outlook, and upside. Lots of questions were raised and Angela responded to each and every one. There was also some discussion regarding the company's implementation of on-line contracts using products like docusign, e-signature, and echosign. Conga merged was mentioned as a leader in producing output letters from Salesforce.

Pete then gave us some insight into  his method of solving a forecasting report request that he was tasked with at Mirapoint. This discussion touched on the relational objects aspect of Salesforce.com.  Pete gave us three possible approaches for solving this reporting problem and provided some excellent insights into the overall process.

Hard to believe that this much information was presented in a one-hour session. As usual, Pete did a fine job of emceeing the Webinar. As much as I enjoy the SVUG face-to-face gatherings, this webinar is hard to beat; its well-focused, very efficient time-wise, and offers great flexibility for presenters and user group members to participate; and, of course we have Pete running it to boot!

==============Below are some quotes from other attendees===================

"Today was the first event of the Silicon Valley User Group that I have been able to attend and I must say, I was impressed!  .... excellent questions and some decent best practice sharing.  Hope to be part of more of these sessions in the future!"

Franco - Big Machins

"I heard the presenter say they had a required field for why an Opportunity was Closed-Won.  ....  I loved that they were putting the focus on the successes as much as the losses. "

Kim - American Medical Systems

"It was a valuable session but would be good to have more dialogue between the speakers and attendees."

Christine - InfoBlock

"I learned that a lot of people decide to build their own objects instead of using what Salesforce provides for forecasting but what they can't easily re-create is the management over-ride portion.  That was very useful for me to hear in the context of my own implementation."
Rhonda - Audatex

Opportunity Management, Forecasting only with Salesforce.com

Opportunity Forecasting Webinar - Click here to register

The third Thursday is upon us which means we get to meet for another webinar.  We have Angela Pellegrino, Salesforce Administrator, at LinkedIn to talk to us about how they've been doing forecasting all nativly within Salesforce. They don't use the Salesforce Forecast module and she'll walk you through what customizations she did to their opportunities to make it work for them: new picklists, formula fields and some validation rules.

Then I'll show you the "One" report our COO looks at to run his forecast.  Incidentally it stopped him from modify the entire renewal ordering process with one formula field and this report.  If we have time I'll show you how we automated our 'customer base'.  Can you say you know exactly how many new customers you added this quarter? How about Lost? What do you consider a customer, anyone that has purchased or one that is currently under support?
