Seattle

Welcome to Dreamforce

To all those who are attending, Welcome!  To all those that couldn't make it, hopefully these posts will give you a taste of what you're missing.

First for those of you who are here... the Expo opens for breakfast tomorrow at 7:30.  A full hour and a half before the keynote speech.  I'm not sure how they're doing it yet, there is "meal seating" in the Expo area and there is also Networking Lounge and Meal Seating in Hall A in Moscone South.  I think South is where the food will actually be.  I will have our User Group banner on a table there somewhere until probably 8:30am.  Then I'll head up to the "meeting place" under the pedestrian overpass from Yerba Buena over Howard street near the Zeum.  We'll head down around 8:45 if you're interested in sitting with the group.

For those of you not here, this Dreamforce is shaping up to being one of the craziest (at least in the number of people) ever.  Tonight at the reception there was more people than I've ever seen before on the welcome night.  It was very difficult to squeeze down the narrow aisles and more than once, my backpack almost took someone's drink out (tragedy, no?).

I'm really looking forward to the Keynotes and the platform state of the union.  Not to mention the Black Crowes tomorrow night.

Meeting recap and Dreamforce preview

We had our meeting today at Tableau Software here in Fremont.

Serge Paxton gave a great presentation on community supplemented by JP Lie with information on the developer community.  If you  haven't checked it out, go do it!

http://community.salesforce.com
http://developer.force.com

Nurud Mohamed then gave a presentation on Winter '10 release.  Lots of cool stuff including, Knowledge, Content Delivery and Analytics enhancements.

Finally, I wrapped things up with a lively (and short) presentation on Dreamforce.  I hope you're all going to come join us there.  Since I have MY content, I'll go ahead and put it up here for anyone who missed it.  Also, if you haven't signed up and are still interested in going, User Group Members get a discount.  Please contact me if you need the code.

Go check out the Dreamforce site here: http://www.salesforce.com/dreamforce/DF09/site

Some Highlights:
  • Keynote speeches by Marc Benioff and Colin Powell
  • Tons of valuable breakout sessions for all types of users and developers
  • A huge expo with partners to add value to your Salesforce.com org
  • Direct access to Salesforce.com employees
  • The annual Global Gala - this year's musical guest: The Black Crowes
The Attendee Portal has been getting better each year.

You can see breakout sessions now and put them on a calendar to resolve conflicts and figure out how to squeeze as much as you can into the 3 days.  Loren suggested putting everything that you're interested in on the calendar at first and then just do conflict resolution to decide what you can actually attend.

There is an orientation session for first time Dreamforce attendees on the 17th at 5pm.  This is the first year that it's being held, so I am going to go check it out.  Tom Wong, author of Salesforce.com for Dummies and VP of Dreamforce is hosting that session.

You can also see all the vendors in the expo.  There may be ones you want to hit first or last.  I suggest going to all of them at least once during the course of Dreamforce.  There are small companies that could provide the exact solution you are looking for.  Don't be afraid to introduce yourself and do the "badge dance."  The "badge dance" is where the vendor tries to scan your badge, but it doesn't work at first so there is a lot of leaning in and out... it's quite humorous.

There are lots of swag to be collected as well.  I generally use the bag you get at registration to schlep all my swag home in.

Tips and Tricks:
  • Plan ahead - use the Attendee portal to it's fullest potential.  If you can, arrive early for the reception on the 17th and check out the conference guide.  It has invaluable information on layout and events.
  • Wear comfortable shoes
  • Go to the keynote speeches.  They are long, but worth it most of the time.
  • Go to as many "hands on" labs as possible.  You actually get to play with tools that way.
  • Be sure to visit the Salesforce.com Campground and Force.com Zone.  Make arrangements to meet your Account Exec, Success Manager and/or Premier Support Contact.
  • Have FUN!

We always try to meet up and never quite succeed.  This year I'm trying something different.  If you're interested, meet me prior to all the big events - Keynotes, Gala, etc  under the pedestrian bridge outside the Moscone South Lobby.  This is right next to the Zeum with the carousel.  I will try to be there 30 to 15 minutes before all of the events for anyone that wants to sit together.

Also, once I have the layout of the dining area.  I will post on here where I will be staking out tables during breakfast.  I always try to have a good breakfast to stay awake for those early sessions and keynotes.  Even after the vendor parties ;-)

Hope to see you all there!  Feel free to contact me directly or leave a comment if you have any questions or suggestions for anyone.

Salesforce.com Analytics

What do you use to analyze your data?

Do you have an on premise solution that you download your Salesforce.com data to?  Or do you use a company like Business Objects or LucidEra (who, apparently is closing very soon)?  Or do you use Salesforce.com's wonderful internal analytics?

Though the funnel chart introduced in the Summer '09 release is cool, it really doesn't give you the ability to do any complex analysis.  As a dashboard chart, it's nice to be able to see in bold colors where the numbers are, but if you really want to know where your big deals are, who is (or isn't) following up on their opportunities, etc., you need a BI package.

SaaS BI vendors like Business Objects and LucidEra connect directly to your Salesforce.com data and allow you to do analysis, but sometimes don't give you the flexibility that an on premise BI solution can provide.  Of course, one of the trade offs is how do you get your data into your BI solution if it's on premise?  Can it connect over the internet?  What's the performance like?

There are several vendors that offer tools to get your Salesforce.com data local.  This has some side benefits as well.  Have you ever had a user run up to you and say, "Can you help me? I just deleted my contact?"  And then, when you teach them how to use the recycle bin, they admit that they didn't delete the WHOLE contact, just some of the contact information.  If you have a local copy of the data, just do a query, get the info and update the data.  Handy, no?

My favorite tool for this is DBAmp from ForceAmp.  Not only is it a simple application to install, the support is great (and it's not that pricey).  It allows your Salesforce.com organization to appear as a "Linked Server" to Microsoft SQL server.  This allows you to not only copy your data locally, but even update it (I can hear the DBAs salivating about writing stored procedures to do all sorts of fun stuff with their data).  Of course, there are other tools out there for this like Cast Iron and Pervasive that allow you do it with a point and a click, but they'll cost you.

Now that your data is local, what are you going to do with it?  Well... I'm going to toot my own horn here, I don't do it that often, so if it offends you, skip this paragraph.  We use our own product here at Tableau Software to analyze our Salesforce.com data.  Chris Stolte, one of our founders, wrote an awesome blog post about it a while back.  I love to use Tableau to make pivot tables and slice up our data to find specific data or groups of records that I need to get to.  We even use it to generate lists of ids to update using Demand Tools.

So, again, what do you use to look at your data?

Summer '09 is sailing in, what features are you looking forward to most?
